Iguana Bio

IguanaAn iguana is one of the most common lizards that are kept in the house as pets. If you have never really looked into the possibility of having an iguana for yourself, you might be surprised what exactly how much information is available on the subject. Here is a little bit of information that you may find interesting, both on how to keep the lizard as a pet and what you should expect whenever you decide to take up this hobby for yourself.

Perhaps one of the first things that I should mention, is the fact that an iguana, like any type of pet should not be taken on a whim. Owning a pet is a serious responsibility and regardless of whether it is a dog, cat or lizard, you are responsible for making sure that it is happy and healthy throughout his lifetime. Not understanding what you’re getting into whenever you own one of these pets can really be problematic. Do as much research as possible, as this will help you to understand if an iguana is going to be a good addition to your household or if it is going to be a problem that you’re going to have to deal with throughout it’s lifetime.

One of the first things that you need to understand about owning this type of reptile is the fact that they keep a fairly strict schedule. This is true whenever it comes to feeding, and they are also going to need to have just the right type of housing in order to continue to grow and thrive. Many people don’t really consider the fact that this type of lizard can get quite large, and if they are well taken care of, they no doubt will over run their current home. They are also aggressive at times, but with the right type of care, these types of problems can typically be overcome.

Another thing that you need to understand about reptiles is the fact that many of them are carriers of salmonella. This is not always going to be an issue, but it can certainly be problematic if you have a pregnant woman in the house or small children. Salmonella infections are not going to bother the iguana, they are going to bother the individuals that come into contact with the iguana. Take the proper precautions in order to safeguard anybody who could have an issue with this type of bacteria.

One final thing that you need to keep in mind is that having an iguana, much like having any type of pet can be quite expensive. Many people are really only looking at the price tag that is on the reptile but in reality, you’re going to have to pay for room and board as well as any veterinarian bills that are associated with owning one of these animals. This can easily cost you $250 or more, as well as ongoing expenses that you will accrue. If this is out of your price range, consider getting a gerbil.
